M-Pesa is a mobile money service that lets people store money on their phone and send or receive payments using a mobile number. It is operated by Safaricom and Vodacom and is widely used across parts of Africa.

M-Pesa is available in Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Egypt, Mozambique, Lesotho, Ghana, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

What currencies are available for M-Pesa?

M-Pesa supports KES, TZS, ETB, EGP, MZN, LSL, GHS, and CDF. Each account uses the currency of its country.

No, M-Pesa accounts do not require signing.

How do I set up an M-Pesa account?

Register for M-Pesa through your local mobile network operator. An active mobile number is required.

How do I add M-Pesa as a payment method in Haveno?

  • Go to the top menu in Haveno and select Account.
  • Select Traditional Currency Accounts.
  • Click Add new account.
  • Select M-Pesa.
  • Enter your account holder name and mobile number, and select your country. The currency is set from the country.
  • Optionally set a custom account name to help you manage multiple accounts. This is visible only to you, for example: M-Pesa - KES - Jomo Otieno.
  • Click Save new account.

You can add a separate account for each M-Pesa account you hold. Make sure all details are correct before saving.

How do I buy XMR with my M-Pesa account?

You can buy XMR with M-Pesa in two ways:

  • Make an offer to buy XMR on the market for your currency.
  • Take an offer to buy XMR on the market for your currency.

When the trade begins, Haveno provides the XMR seller's M-Pesa details. Send the payment and confirm by clicking Payment sent. Once the seller confirms receipt, your security deposit and purchased XMR become available in your wallet.

How do I sell XMR with my M-Pesa account?

You can sell XMR with M-Pesa in two ways:

  • Make an offer to sell XMR on the market for your currency.
  • Take an offer to sell XMR on the market for your currency.

When the trade begins, Haveno provides your M-Pesa details to the XMR buyer. After you receive the payment, confirm by clicking Payment received. The buyer then receives their XMR and you receive your security deposit back.

Are there any limits for me to be aware of when using my M-Pesa account?

M-Pesa sets transaction and balance limits that vary by country and account type. Check the limits that apply in your country, since trades above them may need to be cancelled.

Are there any fees for me to be aware of when using my M-Pesa account?

M-Pesa charges fees for some transfers, depending on the country and the amount. Check the current fees for your country.

How does dispute resolution work when trading with M-Pesa?

If a dispute occurs, the arbitrator may ask the buyer to provide information showing that they paid the correct amount to the XMR seller within the correct time frame.

The arbitrator may ask the seller to provide information to prove their account details are correct, or to show whether a payment was late or of the wrong amount.
